I’m trying to extend my webcam to 100+ feet, so I bought a Cables unlimited Cat5 over USB extender. But the problem is it doesn’t detect anything! I tried different cables(even 3ft), but still nothing. When I tried with a USB drive the little light came on, so it’s getting power, but it doesn’t want to connect. Anyone know? Thanks!

- Are the specific wires in a cat5 cable made of different substances?
- Would doing it in the wrong order possibly make the wire not work?
- Could doing it in the wrong order make the wire less effective?

My home is 8 years old, and some time ago I recall a DSL installer commenting on the extra pairs when he went to wire it. I believe he meant that I had CAT5 but I’m not sure. Is there any way for me (as a wiring moron and all around idiot) to tell by examining one of the phone jacks to tell if the house is pre-wired? What should I be looking for?

And secondly, if the house is indeed pre-wired, how difficult is it to install the appropriate jacks and get it set up properly.

I realize that this is a job best left to a pro, but I have the feeling it would be cost-prohibitive.
To add:

I pulled one of the phone jacks, and there are 8 pairs there. Two connected to the telephone jack, and six addtional unused. Is it likely that these additional pairs are CAT 5 and could be used for ethernet?
