Wireless Help Request?

Monday, September 17th, 2007
Kauai Girl asked:

I have a Compaq Presario 1500 laptop which has been wireless in the past (at another location) but is not wireless at the present time (hooked up to a modem). I bought my son a Toshiba laptop for Christmas along with a router to hopefully both be wireless. His is wireless - it found my signal and works fine. Mine on the other hand - not so much. I talked with the router company who after an hour of trying to come up with someone told me to get USB wireless adapter so I did (made from same company as router). Now I can see the wireless connection - says it is connected and strength is excellent but it cannot find the server. (So I have the Compaq still hooked to the modem in order to have internet.) I contacted Compaq via email and they had me uninstall the USB wireless adapter and restart - still no server to be found. Best Buy said to bring in adapter and laptop for them to look at as Geek Squad could not do anything over the phone.
Any suggestions?
THANKS!!!!

Linksys wireless setup question?

Friday, September 7th, 2007
sillydilly66 asked:

I have an older Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop I am trying to setup with a Linksys wireless router. I bought a Linksys wireless card for the laptop. I was told that this card was all I needed. I was having trouble with the setup so I called Linksys. They told me the setup will not work because I do not have an ethernet adapter on this computer. Isn’t that what the card is supposed to be? Do I need to buy something else? Please help!
I did call Linksys. They told me I do not have an ethernet adapter. What does this mean? I do have a card that I inserted into the laptop. I have highspeed internet through Comcast. I just really need to know what Linkysy meant when she told me the laptop does not have an ethernet adapter because I thought the card was all I needed.
The comcast modem is currently connected to a PC.
acm26,
Thanks for the intelligent response. I do have another computer, but I have not connected the router yet. The instructions said install the CD FIRST and follow the instructions. I got stopped during the setup because it could not locate a network adapter. It told me how to enable LAN in network connections, but there is no LAN listed to enable. I did connect it once to the other computer, but it still didn’t work. Also, the other computer doesn’t work very well so I can no longer access the internet from it. Sometimes I get lucky and I can, but it takes 10 minutes for a page to load.

Nicole B asked:

i had a linksys wireless adaptor hooked up to my laptop and it recieves the signal from my desektop and my laptop was running very slow so i restored it back to factory setttings thinking i was all set because i still has all of my linksys software, but i follow the direction for linksys by putting the adaptor into the computer and since i have windows XP on the bottom right it’s supposed to say new hardware detected and guide me through the intalation progress, but this in not appearing, nothing visible changes with my computer it just makes the noise that new hardeware has been plugged in but no box or intallation help appear, what should i do? should i buy a new adaptor?

Wireless?????

Saturday, September 1st, 2007
shootin_star asked:

I have just gone wireless using BT Voyager 2091 and I am worried about the security of it.

I have not set up any passwords, the only password I entered was underneath the hub as I was settingit up.

Can other people connect through my wireless system?

How do I make it secure? Or am I being paranoid?
