You may possibly be able to get better performance out of your router with an aerial. However, keep in mind that if the aerial is not the correct one for your router, you could either get poor performance, or burn out the routers transmitter.

You would be better off in the long run, if you need to get 50+ meters of distance, to either purchase an extender for the wireless system

, or if you can run a hardwire a good part of the distance, connect a second access point to the router

. This will give you an oval shaped coverage area, centered around the two wireless points. It may not cost a lot more than trying to rig up an aerial that may not work.

Wireless range tends to be more limited by interference than the gear you are using. Walls, pipes in walls, furniture etc all absorb or block some of the signal.
That being said different devices have different transmit power, the little home grade d-links tend to have pretty low transmit power usually less than 40mw (milliwatt), and the antenna on them tend to be pretty low amplification usually less than 5db (decibels). I am pretty sure legally you can go up to 500mw and as for antenna, I have seen up to 40db.
You may be better just repositioning you ap, or modifying the setup to better reflect the signal, or just get a newer one with better range.
