Wireless routers and connecting it to my computer?

NereidoftheBlue asked:

I have a question about how you connect a wireless router to a computer. So far, I’ve heard that in some cases, the wireless router wirelessly connects to your computer via an adapter of some sort built in inside your computer. Ther OTHER explanation (which is probably MY only option) was that you connect the wireless router via a cable from your PC to the wireless router.

Here’s the thing. I have a wired DSL connection. I want to buy a wireless router, but I’m pretty sure I don’t have that adapter on my PC that can connect to a wireless router, so I’m gonna have to have a cable connecting the wireless router to the PC.

Why do I need a wireless router then if my PC isn’t compatible? Well, I do have other devices that could use some WiFi service, so that’s mostly why I need a wireless router.

So, is there such a thing as a wireless router that can connect to your PC via a cable?

if your talking about a hybrid router then yes, it has cable jacks and wireless availability, most routers accually have that. now for wireless a simple way is getting a usb wireless adapter. Both are easy.. (the cable you need is a cat5e) the normal internet cable. not a phone cable..

Many routers come with a USB wi-fi stick, that’s a very cheap way to go. The answer is, you all of them can connect to cables as well (usually 4).

I think what you are asking is: can you connect your pc (which does not have a wireless connection card) to a wireless router. The answer is yes, of course. Most wireless routers have four jacks to plug in wired connections. You would need wireless network adapters to connect your other equipment without wires.

All wireless routers have about four ports for computers to plug into with an Ethernet cable (the wire that looks like a big telephone plug). The wireless is useful if you are using a laptop and don’t want to stay in the same room, if you have a Nintendo wii or any other wireless gadget. If you really want your PC to be wireless (it’s much slower than being wired directly), you can buy a wireless card for your PC and install it.

The Router/Wireless access point takes the place of your DSL modem. You configure it with your service providers details and your logon details. Buy one which has ethernet ports so you can have a wired connection as well as wireless connections. Netgear (and maybe some others) usually do deals where you get a router and wireless USB adapter (allowing you to connect any computer with a USB port, wirelessly). Personally, I prefer to have my ‘main’ computer cabled to the ethernet port of the router - it just means if you have any wireless issues, you can still connect to the router and take a look at the config / logs.

      Linksys wireless G router.
It has a port for the cable coming from your modem to the router, and 4 ports that you can run cables from router to computers, printers whatever. And still have wireless connection for other things.

well you can add a wireless adapter in your PC to get connected to the wireless router or can simply conect with a cable

in short you can connect to a wireless router with a cable too beacuse almost in every wireless router 4-6 ports are available to connect with wires
